PSA blood test & prostate cancer screening
The PSA blood test is used to screen for prostate cancer. An elevated level of PSA may indicate the presence of prostate cancer.
However this test is not conclusive, and not all patients with elevated PSA levels have cancer; other diseases of the prostate such a benign prostatic enlargement and chronic inflammation (prostatitis) may cause abnormal PSA readings.

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD I START CHECKING MY PSA?
Among all the guidelines, there is variation as to the age to start doing PSA testing.
According to the European Association of Urology guideline, the average man can consider PSA testing from the age of 50 years.
The starting age of testing is lowered to 45 years if he has family history of prostate cancer, and 40 years if he has proven gene mutation that increases risk of prostate cancer.
